Paleo Powdered Sugar

Looking for a whole food substitute for refined powdered white cane sugar? This simple, 1-step, 2-ingredient coconut powdered sugar recipe is perfect for your paleo and whole food confections! All you need is a blender, some coconut sugar, and a little arrowroot or tapioca starch to whip up a batch of this sweet and light powdered sugar in less than 5-minutes!

There are several reasons why I love to substitute coconut powdered sugar into my recipes: nutrient density is one (see below for more info!), it is a lower glycemic food compared to refined powdered white sugar, and the fact that you can use a cleaner starch, like arrowroot or tapioca, compared to highly inflammatory corn starch. Next time you’re looking for powdered sugar for a recipe, try this out! I know you will love the sweet, fruity flavor it brings!

Why Coconut Sugar instead of Cane Sugar?

You may be asking, why make a Paleo powdered sugar instead of just using a pre-packaged organic powdered sugar made from cane sugar?  For 3 simple reasons:

1. It’s unrefined: that means it is a whole food based sweetener just like maple syrup and honey. 

2. It has a lower glycemic index: this is important in supporting stable and consistent blood glucose levels, which is essential in overall health and wellness.

3.  It is nutrient dense: since coconut sugar is unrefined, it contains small amounts of trace minerals such as potassium, iron, calcium, and zinc.

How do I use Coconut Sugar?

Coconut sugar can be used in any of your recipes, just like you would use white cane sugar.  It is easy to add it to baked goods, make coconut buttercream, sweeten your coffee or tea, or add it to any recipe that calls for white sugar. 

Does it taste the same? Yes and no.  Coconut sugar is sweet like white cane sugar, however it does have a subtle and wonderful flavor to it that white cane sugar does not.

Coconut sugar has this beautiful fruity flavor with a subtle mineral-y hint that, in my opinion, enhances the sweetness, and honestly, in most of your baked goods and dishes you won’t even notice a difference.  To me, it is almost like a sweeter, more delicate molasses just not as bitter or pungent as the unsulphured versions you use in foods like gingerbread.

So grab a bag of coconut sugar and let’s get cooking!

Paleo Powdered Sugar Ingredients

Makes approximately 1 cup

1 cup Organic Coconut Sugar

2.5 tsp Arrowroot or Tapioca Starch

How to make Paleo Powdered Sugar

1.  Add the coconut sugar and starch to a high speed blender

2.  Place the lid on tightly and turn blender onto low speed. Gradually speed up the blender to the highest setting. 

3.  Blend on high for about 30-60 seconds until sugar is light and fluffy, and pulverized.

4.  Turn the blender off and wait a minute or two to allow the sugar to settle before opening the lid.

5.  Use in any recipe you need powdered sugar in!

Q: Can I use palm sugar in place of the coconut sugar?

A: Yes, of course you can!

Q: Will this work in a regular blender if I don’t have a vitamix?

A: Yes, blend it on high speed until the sugar has become a powder, it may just take a little longer.

Q: Do I use this 1:1 as I would regular powdered sugar?

A: 100% yes!
