The Best Homemade Pizza Sauce (Paleo, Whole 30)

4 minute read

If you love homemade pizza as much as I do, but find that store bought sauces are just….meh? Then welcome to your pizza’s new bestie. This easy and simple, sugar free, Paleo and Whole30 friendly pizza sauce is exactly what you want and need. Tangy tomatoes, lots of herby goodness, and just the right consistency to make every pizza shine, because, let’s be honest, it is ALL about the sauce!

Pizza is one of my favorite foods, but I find that I am not in love with sauces that are so sweet it puts a jolly rancher to shame!  I came up with this savory, mouthwatering pizza sauce out of a need for a whole food sauce that enhances my pizza, not sweetens it.  I promise, you’ll never look back after trying this sauce and it is so good you can use it as a dipping sauce for fresh focaccia or even for meatball subs!

Why Tomatoes are So Good for You!

There are so many reasons to love tomatoes other than their tart and tangy delicious flavor and how versatile they are, they contain loads of nutrients such as lycopene, insoluble and soluble fiber, vitamins C, K1, B9(folate), potassium, and antioxidants like beta carotene [1]. Let’s dive a little into what lycopene is an how it supports your health.

Lycopene is an antioxidant known as a carteniod, and is found in red, pink and orange fruits and vegetables, it’s what gives these plants their reddish hues.  Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and combats oxidative stress protecting your cells and your health.

Lycopene has been shown to support a healthy heart and blood pressure [2] as well as the balance of good cholesterol (HDL) to bad cholesterol (LDL).

Does Organic Matter?  That depends on what you are buying, and when it comes to tomatoes, I always buy organic and here’s why…tomatoes are a delicious fruit that lots and lots of critters love, and to yield a profitable crop, industrial farming loads up these delicate, juicy gems (which are often GMO’s) with lots of pesticides that contain glyphosate and other neurotoxins.

Across the globe, over 80% of all the GMO crops that are cultivated have been modified against herbicides such as RoundUp.  This means that the crops have had their DNA altered so that they are resistant against chemicals like RoundUp allowing for these toxic chemicals to be sprayed on the crops, killing other plants and pests without harming the crop itself.  The problem with chemicals like glyphosate is that they are now part of the food you eat, and have given rise to “superbugs” and “superweeds” that have become resistant to it and can now only be killed with chemicals that are even more toxic like 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D, an ingredient in Agent Orange) shown to correlate with thyroid disorders, hormonal disorders, decreased fertility, birth defects, and cancer [1].

Now buying organic is a personal choice, and not everything you buy has to be organic, check out EWG’s Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen as they update their list of the recommend produce they recommend buying organically, if possible as well as the conventional ones that are safer to buy.

So grab some a can or two of organic tomato sauce and let’s get cooking!

The Best Homemade Pizza Sauce Ingredients

Makes approximately 16-20 ounces

2 cans Organic No Salt Added Tomato Sauce*

3-4 Cloves of Garlic, finely minced

1/4 cup of EVOO

2 tsp Italian Seasoning

1 tsp Fine Sea Salt or Pink Salt

½-1 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes (opt)

* If you do not have a No Salt Tomato Sauce, then omit adding the sea salt to the sauce as this will make the sauce too salty.  And if you do use salted tomato sauce, be sure it has sea salt or pink salt instead of refined white salt.

How to Make the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce

1.  Over low-medium heat, add all of the ingredients to a medium saucepan and bring to a low simmer.

2.  Turn the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 45-60 minutes to allow for all the flavors to meld and for the sauce to thicken up some.

3.  Use immediately for your homemade pizzas or transfer to a clean glass jar.

Enjoy!

FAQs

Q: How long will homemade pizza sauce last in the refrigerator?

A: Stored in an air-tight container, homemade pizza sauce should last for about a week, if you aren’t ready to use it, a simple hack is to freeze it in a freezer safe container or in an ice cube tray until you are ready for it.

Q: My pizza sauce is really thin, how do I thicken it?

A: Let it simmer for longer to evaporate the excess water, it usually takes about 45-60 minutes for this.

Q: Can I cook the pizza sauce over higher heat if I’m in a hurry?

A: Yes, however, you’ll want to hover over it and stir it very often to keep the sugars in the tomato sauce from scorching and burning. I would not go higher than medium heat for this, as you do want to give it some time to come together for the best pizza sauce flavor!
